I’d like to introduce you to Dinah Moyer (the woman in the center), Executive Director for Island Community Medical Services, Inc. on the island on Vinalhaven, Maine. The island is just a ferry ride away from Rockland, and its population is right around 1,200 people (and up to 4,000 in the summer)! That makes it Maine’s largest off-shore community. The ICMS has been around for years, helping Vinalhaven residents receive quality medical care. If you haven’t been to Vinalhaven before, I recommend you visit! The area is beautiful, and is even home to one of the world’s largest lobster fishing fleets. Dinah recently completed Invisalign ® treatment with us, and her results are beautiful! Learn more about Dinah and her candidacy for Invisalign below.
A Fun Fact about Dinah
Did I mention Dinah is a Princeton alumna? She’s just about as smart as they come. And another thing I should mention about Dinah: she is my boss (and a wicked cool one at that). Michelle Webber (the lady on the right) and I work on the island one day a month, traveling out to see Vinalhaven patients and offer routine dental care.
The Right Treatment for Dinah
When Dinah decided she was ready for a straighter smile, I was thrilled she chose me to help her achieve it! To maintain Dinah’s beautiful smile during treatment, we used Invisalign®. The Invisalign method allowed her to discreetly straighten her smile over months of treatment, without the wires and brackets of traditional orthodontics.
Dinah was a great candidate for Invisalign®, because Invisalign, unlike some other non-traditional orthodontic treatments, can treat a variety of smile alignment issues. It’s best for adult patients like Dinah, who don’t want the obvious appearance of orthodontics. However, Invisalign also makes Invisalign Teen, for those younger patients who are also looking for a less visible smile straightening solution. And of course, because Dinah is so smart, she understood that Invisalign patients must be diligent! Aligners must be worn for 22 hours a day in order to see the best results.
We usually see patients like Dinah for smile alignment issues such as gapped teeth, crowded teeth or crooked teeth. But did you know it can also treat a lot of other alignment problems? Including:
- Overbite: when the top teeth significantly overlap the bottom, hiding or obscuring much of their appearance.
- Underbite: when the bottom teeth overlap in front of the top teeth. Invisalign® ® can correct some types of underbites, but other instances might require more extensive orthodontic work or oral surgery.
- Crossbite: when the mouth is closed, if some top teeth rest behind some bottom teeth, while some remain in front, this is most often referred to as a crossbite. Invisalign® ® can correct some instances of crossbite.
- Open Bite: when the top and bottom teeth don’t meet together when the mouth is closed.
