Little Green Guys – Sugar Bugs take over

Sugar Bugs Take Over

We all saw many lucky leprechauns among those that celebrated St. Patrick’s day and that got me thinking about some other little green guys in a book I just read. When the folks at Seasons of Smiles dental office went to Yankee Dental Congress in January we learned about lots of new technology as well as some fun treats. One of those fun treats for me was buying the book Sugar Bugs by Erica Weisz and Dr. Sam Weisz. I have been on the search for a way to explain to my children the importance of healthy eating as well as brushing and flossing. Mutans Take Over Sugar Bugs tells the story of the Mutans family which are the nasty bugs … Continue reading →

I think the canary is in trouble.

Baby teeth with holes

Have you heard of the canaries that were used by the miners?  I guess the idea was that there were situations in the mines when dangerous gases would be present that could have dire consequences.  By taking canaries down into the mines, the miners would keep an eye on the canary.  If the canary became ill or died, the miner knew that he needed to get out. Can we think of baby teeth as the proverbial canary? The photo is very common, actually this photos was taken this year.  Mom called to make an appointment.  Her child was having a tooth ache, and we always want to help parents and children with tooth aches.  We attempted to take x-rays, but … Continue reading →

Hey Jimmy Kimmel, I told my kids “no in-between meals or snacks”.

Have you seen the Jimmy Kimmel’s 2013 candy video?  It’s a hoot!  If you liked the 2012 version, this one is more of the same. Have you heard that sugar is as addictive as crack? I have, and I always thought the comparison was a bit exaggerated.  But when I saw this video, it makes me wonder. Are we wired for sugar?  Does our body crave it that hard? As a dentist, I have been asked so many times for ideas on how to get less cavities.  One of our standard suggestions is straight out of the American Dental Association handout on snacks.  Press here to see the handout.  I must admit the reactions when I tell my patients ‘no … Continue reading →

A candy for the prescription?

This last week, I was asked if I could pick up a prescription for my neighbor.  As I was standing in line at the local pharmacy, waiting for my turn to pick up the medications, this is what I saw. I couldn’t help but laugh. Candy bars?  Really?  York Peppermint Patties, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, M&M’s Plain, Almond Joys, Butterfingers, Milky Way,  Snickers, Hershey Chocolate, Kit Kat Bars.  And last, but not least, my personal nemesis, M&M Peanuts. Top 10 Medications Prescribed in the USA A few years back I had seen a list of the top 50 medications prescribed here in the United States. Unfortunately I can’t find my handout, so I googled the following search term, “top prescribed medications … Continue reading →

The Crazy Amount Of Sugar Hiding In Random Foods

The Crazy Amount Of Sugar Hiding In Random Foods

The Crazy Amount Of Sugar Hiding In Random Foods Sugar is Everywhere What is it with dentists and sugar? When I saw this video, I couldn’t help but think of one of our favorite dental patient kids, I would see him on a regular basis, around town, with a big liter bottle of Mountain Dew soda, and I couldn’t help but cringe knowing that I would have to break the bad news to him at his next dental cleaning. To my pleasant suprise, it still amazes me that his teeth could be bathed in Mountain Dew on a regular basis and never get a cavity. Why is it? It just doesn’t seem logical! I don’t think there is an … Continue reading →

What is the Number One Worst Food For Your Teeth?

What is the Number One Worst Food For Your Teeth?

By. Dr. Mark Burhenne, DDS Did you know that candy is not the No. 1 cavity-causing food? You’ll probably be thrilled to learn that dark chocolate actually promotes good dental health. The worst food for your teeth may surprise you. THE CAVITY-CAUSERS IN YOUR PANTRY Don’t go crackers Brace yourself: The No. 1 most cavity-causing food in the world is actually the saltine cracker. This fact shocks most of my patients, since crackers are everywhere and are even given to toddlers as a healthy snack. Saltine crackers are worse than candy for your teeth because they’re a fermentable and highly processed starch. Many people don’t realize that most crackers are highly processed and contain genetically engineered ingredients, essentially increasing the … Continue reading →

Why we Love Xylitol!!!

They sent us some free samples of Xylitol Gum to our office.

Taken From California Dental Association MOVING FORWARD. TOGETHER. What is xylitol? Xylitol is a natural sugar alcohol that helps prevents cavities. You may recognize other sugar alcohols used in sugarless products, such as mannitol and sorbitol. Xylitol is the sugar alcohol that shows the greatest promise for cavity prevention. It is equal in sweetness and volume to sugar and the granular form can be used in many of the ways that sugar is used, including to sweeten cereals and hot beverages and for baking (except when sugar is needed for yeast to rise). How does xylitol prevent cavities? Xylitol inhibits the growth of the bacteria that cause cavities. It does this because these bacteria (Streptococcus mutans) cannot utilize xylitol to … Continue reading →
