Chew smart with sugar-free gum.

Chew smart with sugar-free gum.

You already know that brushing, flossing, and regular visits to your dentist all promote healthy teeth and gums. But did you know that chewing sugar-free gum can also be an important way to eliminate cavity-causing bacteria from your mouth? Chewing Wrigley’s sugar-free gum for just 20 minutes after every meal can prevent tooth decay – there’s even research to prove it!

When you chew gum, you produce more saliva. This helps to irrigate your mouth and clean away debris and bacteria that can cause decay and cavities. An increase in saliva production also helps strengthen your teeth because it carries potassium and calcium with it. These minerals help increase the bone density in your jawbones, and they harden your tooth enamel.

Be careful, though. You don’t want to chew gum that contains sugar. This promotes the formation of cavities by giving the bacteria in your mouth the energy it needs to destroy your teeth – stick to sugarless gum when you chew. I do like Wrigley sugarless gum, but I recommend all sugarless gum because it helps neutralize plaque acids, it maintains the optimum pH in your mouth.

Need more convincing? For several years, the American Dental Hygienists’ Association has worked closely with Wrigley to promote an oral health program that increases public awareness about good oral hygiene. Talk about putting your money where your mouth is! Additionally, one recent clinical study determined that chewing sugar-free gum could reduce the cost of dental treatment by a whopping $9 million each year! Think about it – less bacteria, fewer cavities, and even though I love seeing you in my office, you’d potentially have fewer visits for dental work.

Of course, if you suffer from oral issues such as TMJ or if you have functional swallowing problems, sugar-free gum isn’t for you. Talk to me about alternatives to keeping your oral health the best it can be!

I recently received this email from Wrigley gum promoting their gum for oral health. Thank you, Wrigley, for keeping me on your mailing list, we will do all we can to get the word out.
