Little Green Guys – Sugar Bugs take over

Sugar Bugs Take Over

We all saw many lucky leprechauns among those that celebrated St. Patrick’s day and that got me thinking about some other little green guys in a book I just read. When the folks at Seasons of Smiles dental office went to Yankee Dental Congress in January we learned about lots of new technology as well as some fun treats. One of those fun treats for me was buying the book Sugar Bugs by Erica Weisz and Dr. Sam Weisz. I have been on the search for a way to explain to my children the importance of healthy eating as well as brushing and flossing. Mutans Take Over Sugar Bugs tells the story of the Mutans family which are the nasty bugs … Continue reading →

Teeth and soda don’t mix

Switch Witch

Switch Witch Pumpkin

Have you heard of the Switch Witch? The Switch Witch is the magic being that switches “extra” Halloween candy for something better. Notice the emphasis on “extra” candy. Halloween only happens once a year but a few pieces of candy can be enough to validate all the trick or treating activity, especially if the treat is not something your child usually eats. Depending on the age of your children, the something better they receive in exchange for their “extra” candy could be arts and crafts, books, toys, educational games, clothes, sports equipment, an experience like movie passes or admission to one of their favorite activities or cold, hard cash. You do not have to add an expense to your lives. The gift could … Continue reading →

Doughnuts at the dental office

Dunkin Donuts at the Dental Office?

When I drove into our parking lot I had to chuckle, “Doughnuts at the dental office?!” hmmm, maybe we can use this . . . I must admit I’m not a big fan of doughnuts. Maybe I should clarify. I hate doughnuts. Can I go on? In my opinion, Doughnuts should never be eaten, or especially given to children.  I will be bold enough to say they should never be fed to the elderly.  As a dental professional I know that doughnuts not only cause cavities, but a host of other aliments.  Hmm, this could be an interesting list. Diabetes Heart Disease Hypertension Bad Breath Obesity Cancer Alzheimer’s Low Libido Atherosclerosis Colon Cancer Diarrhea Stroke Depression Dandruff OK, maybe I’m … Continue reading →

New Years Resolutions and BMI

Tools for calculating BMI

By definition BMI or Body Mass Index is a measure of relative size based on the mass and height of an individual. As defined in Wiki. I remember a few years back when I started playing with the idea of losing weight I was reading everything I could on the subject on internet and I ran across the formula.  I found an online BMI calculator so I typed in my numbers, just for curiosity sake, and the number came back as 33.  Ho hum, whatever.  Then I glanced over and noticed that anything over 30 was considered obese. WHAT? I remember getting mad at BMI, they had to be wrong.  Obese?  Really?  Couldn’t they pick a better word? BMI does have its … Continue reading →

A candy for the prescription?

Waiting in line to have my prescription filled at the local pharmacy.

This last week, I was asked if I could pick up a prescription for my neighbor.  As I was standing in line at the local pharmacy, waiting for my turn to pick up the medications, this is what I saw. I couldn’t help but laugh. Candy bars?  Really?  York Peppermint Patties, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, M&M’s Plain, Almond Joys, Butterfingers, Milky Way,  Snickers, Hershey Chocolate, Kit Kat Bars.  And last, but not least, my personal nemesis, M&M Peanuts. Top 10 Medications Prescribed in the USA A few years back I had seen a list of the top 50 medications prescribed here in the United States. Unfortunately I can’t find my handout, so I googled the following search term, “top prescribed medications … Continue reading →

The Crazy Amount Of Sugar Hiding In Random Foods

The Crazy Amount Of Sugar Hiding In Random Foods

The Crazy Amount Of Sugar Hiding In Random Foods Sugar is Everywhere What is it with dentists and sugar? When I saw this video, I couldn’t help but think of one of our favorite dental patient kids, I would see him on a regular basis, around town, with a big liter bottle of Mountain Dew soda, and I couldn’t help but cringe knowing that I would have to break the bad news to him at his next dental cleaning. To my pleasant suprise, it still amazes me that his teeth could be bathed in Mountain Dew on a regular basis and never get a cavity. Why is it? It just doesn’t seem logical! I don’t think there is an … Continue reading →

What is the Number One Worst Food For Your Teeth?

What is the Number One Worst Food For Your Teeth?

By. Dr. Mark Burhenne, DDS Did you know that candy is not the No. 1 cavity-causing food? You’ll probably be thrilled to learn that dark chocolate actually promotes good dental health. The worst food for your teeth may surprise you. THE CAVITY-CAUSERS IN YOUR PANTRY Don’t go crackers Brace yourself: The No. 1 most cavity-causing food in the world is actually the saltine cracker. This fact shocks most of my patients, since crackers are everywhere and are even given to toddlers as a healthy snack. Saltine crackers are worse than candy for your teeth because they’re a fermentable and highly processed starch. Many people don’t realize that most crackers are highly processed and contain genetically engineered ingredients, essentially increasing the … Continue reading →
